Forum for Satellite Navigation

The Galileo satellite navigation system is one of the most important European innovation projects. It is of great significance to the economy, because it provides the basis for numerous satellite-based products and services. There is a considerable market potential for satellite navigation applications.

The "Forum for Satellite Navigation" (SatNav-Forum) provides nationwide support to the cooperation among German regional initiatives working on satellite navigation applications. Besides offering opportunities for a wide-scale exchange of information and experience, it strengthens a nationwide network of business enterprises, scientific institutes, civil organisations, administrations and end users. The Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) considers itself as a facilitator and patron of the "Forum for Satellite Navigation".

The focus is on the following activities:

• the provision of information by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs to the regional networks and their members
• the collection of information from the networks and its consolidation by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs
• improving cooperation between the networks
• presentation to the outside world
• inclusion of users

In order to ensure opportunities in the growth market of satellite navigation applications in particular for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, numerous regional initiatives, application centres and associations have emerged in the German federal states. These initiatives develop a multiplicity of activities to market the ideas of their members. However, because of their orientation, their action is usually limited to a specific region. In order to provide the necessary nationwide linkups, to be equipped for the competition on the applications market, the BMVBS launched the SatNav-Forum in 2006.

The SatNav-Forum meets four times a year, with the meetings hosted by one of its members on a rotating basis. At these meetings, regional and local firms have the opportunity to present their ideas and projects. The members identify and use synergies and discuss new processes of business and project development.

To better develop the markets for satellite navigation applications, a National SatNav User Conference is staged once a year by the BMVBS. Five times already, this event provided an opportunity for information and discussions on the potential and applications of satellite navigation and Galileo.

An important component of the SatNav-Forum consists in the demonstration of competency at trade fairs. In March 2011, the Forum presented itself for the fifth time at the IT trade fair CeBIT, the internationally leading trade fair for mobility-oriented information and communication technology in Hannover. The network also exhibited at the international level, for example at the "Space Show” in Toulouse. The participation in trade fairs and congresses will be further developed and extended.

The BMVBS supports these activities as a facilitator and patron of this forum. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) is also involved. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) supports the activities as coordinator of the SatNav-Forum on behalf of the BMVBS.
