Region of Bremen

Competencies in the Region of Bremen

Bremen has always been the starting point for journeys to new horizons. The ships of the Hanseatic League linked the coasts of Europe and pioneers like Henrich Focke paved the way for modern aerospace. Today, the Region of Bremen plays a major role in the space business and science. In addition, this unique region is an important location for trading, maritime logistics and renewable energy, in particular, wind power.

Maritime Economy

Safer and greener shipping have become imperative, especially in the advent of increasing global maritime traffic. Bremen and Lower Saxony, with their natural affinity to the maritime sector host an innovative environment comprising leading companies, renowned institutes and excellent universities, which contribute with applications and solutions, based on Earth Observation, Navigation and Communication technologies.

Environment

Monitoring coastal zones, polar and marine environments through terrestrial and oceanographic research using Earth observation data and airborne images has become more and more significant. Without satellite assistance, measurement and observation of polar sea ice and climate change for example, would be restricted. The two city-state Bremen and Bremerhaven play a globally renowned role in these scientific areas.

Atmosphere

The changing climate, ozone depletion, and a reduced air quality due to particulate matter are central aspects of European initiatives, like GMES, because they directly influence our daily life. Satellite systems developed in Bremen are able to provide information on the quality of the air we breathe. The Hanseatic City is scientifically renowned in the field of atmospheric surveillance using ground, airborne and satellite based remote sensing techniques.

Logistics

Trading and logistics are deeply embedded in Northwest Germany. The cities and ports from Bremen to Cuxhaven and Emden boast an excellent infrastructure providing significant potential for added value. Bremerhaven’s container port is a nodal point for international trading. To meet the special requirements of maritime security such as fleet tracking or real-time surveillance of containers, industry and research institutes from Bremen are working on prestigious pilot projects, such as GALILEO satellite systems to make global commodity flows much more secure.

Renewable Energy

Current studies support the notion that all human energy requirements could be covered by wind energy. Satellite-based systems are capable of delivering and providing accurate weather data to forecast the wind direction and intensity. This leads to a better occupancy, efficiency and maintenance of onshore and offshore wind farms. A unique pool of knowhow in the region’s competence network for wind power together with the high quality of the infrastructure in Bremen provides perfect conditions for the successful development of the wind power industry.

Aerospace

An innovative environment of leading companies, renowned institutes and universities have secured Northwest Germany as an important location for high-tech research and development as well as production in the field of Aerospace. Space transportation and Exploration, Satellite Integration and Space Applications are examples of the crucial contribution to the national and European space effort.
