NEREUS
NEREUS - Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies
"Bringing the benefits of space uses to regions and their citizens.
A dynamic platform and advocate for regions in matters of space."

NEREUS, the Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies, is an initiative by regions from all over Europe, which share as Full Members its governance.
Emphasis is placed on the use of space technologies. The network aims to explore the benefits of space technologies for Regions and their citizens and to spread their applications.
NEREUS is a strong voice for the regional dimension of European Space Policy and programs as well as end-user needs.
The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is a founding member of NEREUS from the beginning and via CEON is actively participating in the NEREUS Working Groups EO/GMES and GNSS.
The network NEREUS offers Bremen and its stakeholders benefits such as representation in the framework of projects, studies and other publications. The cooperation in the network helped Bremen in the last two years to an increased visibility on European level.
Central milestones for the successful integration of Bremen into the network were the DORIS_Net project (co-ordination CEON) and the contributions into the NEREUS brochures.
Mission statement
From weather forecasting to traffic management (to name but a few examples) space technologies have a growing impact on the daily lives of European citizens. Regions play a major role in all the stages of the value chain and in the policy-making and regulatory processes. At the political level NEREUS acts as the main interface between the Regions and the European Institutions.
As Space is a European “lead market initiative” the overall mission of NEREUS is to fully exploit the potential of the space technology market for the benefit of its Regions and their actors.
NEREUS aims to play an active role in the construction and development of space technology markets in order to ensure that optimal framework conditions are met for the further development of space applications.
As a strong voice for the regional dimension of European Space Policy, NEREUS wants to increase and enhance the participation of citizens and companies in European Space Policy and Programmes. Ultimately, it strives for an adequate representation of end user needs in terms of space applications and services.

Working Groups
The NEREUS Working Groups were launched in March 2009. The outcomes of their first symposium were presented in a Workshop Documentation.
The topics of the NEREUS Working Groups encompass the main fields of cooperation of the NEREUS Political Charter. Although the working group subjects are technology oriented, the organisers strive to put as much emphasis as possible on the application dimension. The NEREUS Working Groups are the content providers of the network.

- Earth Observation/GMES Working Group aims to identify and promote regional priorities within the European GMES initiative, specifically focusing on end-user needs.
- Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Working Group works to maximise the exploitation of GNSS services offered by GALILEO for the benefit of regions, and to influence relevant European policy-making.
- Telecommunication Working Group compiles information on end-users’ needs in terms of satellite communications and applications, their economic impact and how they could be made more accessible for the public.
- Technologies from Space Exploration Working Group, makes recommendations concerning the use of space exploration technologies in support of regional policy initiatives and applications for end-users.
- Communication, Education and Training Working Group is a platform for exchanging knowledge and learning on the European educational potential of space applications, training in space technologies and HR services for enterprises.
- Regional Policy WG is a horizontal group exploring opportunities within EU regional funding programmes
NEREUS Working Groups are still open to welcome new dynamic members. If you wish to receive information on ongoing activities or to join a NEREUS Working Group, please contact the head of the Working Group or the NEREUS Secretariat.
