Maritime Safety and Security – DeMarine
The international transportation is of paramount importance for the global economy. Large amounts of goods are carried by ships of different types from port to port to sustain our modern living standards. The safety and security of vessels and shipping routes are thus of high importance for modern life. Ships are threatened by natural hazards as well as container losses or even piracy. Remote sensing can assist in improving the safety and security.
The DeMarine applications are in the fields of ship detection, detection of man-made objects and improving the forecasting of critical sea conditions, particularly with regard to parametric rolling. In these fields of application the high resolution German satellite system TerraSAR-X is used. The three-year-project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and supervised by the DLR Space Administration under the project number 50 EE 0812.

Sea state information for vessel safety

Container losses could be a thread for other ships
DeMARINE Safety and Security
ShipDetec, Parol and DEKO are three subprojects of DeMARINE.
Ship Detec – Maritime Surveillance
ShipDetec is a R&D project in the field of maritime surveillance integrating the Earth Observation (EO) data from radar satellites (TerraSAR-X) with Automatic Identiication System (AIS) data over the same geographical area. The main focus is on the development of SAR processing algorithms specially tailored to detect ships and the integration of this EO data with AIS data, validated in representative test scenarios. Project partners are DLR, GAUSS and OHB-System AG (Lead).
DEKO – Detection of man -made objects
The DeMarine subproject DEKO focuses on the development of services for the automatic detection and classification of ships and offshore artificial objects on the basis of the German Earth Observation satellites TerraSAR-X and RapidEye. The objectives are 1) the development of reliable detection algorithms and 2) the definition of effective and customized service concepts. Project Partners are Astrium (Lead), Infoterra and Fraunhofer IOSB.
Parol – Parametric Rolling
Goal of the project is to derive the sea state from model data supported by satellite-based measurements and to analyse if dangerous conditions might occur for the ship travelling in the area concerned. A critical combination of sea state and course could result in the loss of cargo or the entire ship. Project partners are DLR institute IMF (Lead), OHB-System AG and GAUSS.

Project Profile:
DeMARINE Security and Environment, DeCOVER and DeSECURE are German, DLR funded gateway projects to the European GMES programme. The three projects will pave the way for the first GMES services with a special focus on the needs of the German user community. The motivation to start DeMARINE is to show potential fields of application for the planned GMES marine core services concerning safety and security in coastal and sea trafic as well as coastal protection.
