Marine Environmental and Climate Research & Applications

Nordwest-Verbund Meeresforschung e. V. (Northwest Marine Research Association) provides a competent contact point for interested companies for questions on marine RTD and a platform for joint marine research projects. Thus it is creating synergies and collaborations within the north-western region of Germany.

The Northwest Marine Research Association in Germany (Nordwest-Verbund Meeresforschung e. V.) is an alliance of marine research institutions in the north-western region of Germany, encompassing the federal states of Bremen and Lower Saxony. In order to foster the application of research results and the development of marine technologies the registered association also aims at planning and performing research and transfer projects jointly with the business sector.

The members of the association use state-of-the-art marine technologies for their research. Many technologies have been newly developed or adapted, partly in collaboration with partners from industry. The available technologies are used in coastal and deep-sea environments.

NWVM Research & Technologies
The available technologies are used within coastal and deep-sea settings and encompass:

  • autonomous and remotely-controlled observing systems,
  • sensors and sensor systems for environmental monitoring,
  • underwater technology to explore the sea floor, including a deep-sea drill rig,
  • modelling of environmental changes.

Special technology transfer workshops and information events are organized to enhance networking of diverse marine and maritime stakeholders from business sectors, government agencies, and research fields, in order to instigate novel joint RTD approaches.

The Northwest Marine Research Association operates under the umbrella of the German Marine Research Consortium KDM.

Real-time data transmission from buoys

Web GIS-Portal for marine habitat mapping
The NWVM is installing a common WebGIS platform for marine habitat research in the North Sea. A distributed data management concept with Web-based standards, Sensor Web Enablement technologies (SWE) and open access will facilitate and coordinate research and administration.

The platform consists of a framework for advanced Web-based retrieval and analysis tools as well as visualization tools for spatially related marine habitat data. The concept is based on integrating distributed data repositories and Web Map Services from all participants and will serve science, public agencies and policy.

Bi-Directional Satellite Telemetry
MARUM has developed and tested real-time data transmission from buoys in the open ocean to land-based stations. The bi-directional telemetry system has proven its long-term stability over several years.

Autonomous Coastal Research Platform
The ICBM is running an autonomous research platform located in the tidal inlet between two East Frisian Islands. It provides real-time, high-resolution data for environmental monitoring and climate research.
