MARISSA
MARISSA – Maritime Safety & Security Applications

Against the background of ever increasing global trade and the need for security and environmental protection, new technologies have to address maritime safety and security. For this reason, a diverse group of leading stakeholders from Bremen formed the Competence Cluster MARISSA.
MARISSA is a unique Competence Cluster in Bremen, Germany
- 6 global players and large scale industrial enterprises belong to the initial members of the Cluster
- 5 fields of application are determined and each has an industrial lead partner
- Cluster development is project-based: research institutes and special competencies of SMEs are involved in projects
- CEON acts as coordinator for applications development
- The Cluster is managed by the WFB economic development agency Bremen
The region of Bremen and Bremerhaven is an outstanding location for the maritime industry.
The two-city state offers ideal access to the sea and coastline with a strong interface to terrestrial logistics, coastal activities and global sea traffic. Furthermore, the Federal State of Bremen is a leading location for space system development, production and operations support, has four universities and numerous scientific institutes providing outstanding competence and capacity for research in Earth Observation, Atmosphere, Climate, maritime environment, maritime security, logistics, security and communication.
Availability of major technologies and competencies
The enterprises Atlas Elektronik GmbH, SIGNALIS, Astrium GmbH, Beluga Shipping GmbH, OHB-System AG, Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH and CEON GmbH have united within the cluster for Maritime Safety and Security. All members bring in their various competencies in the fields of:
- Unmanned and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
- Sonar and radar technology
- Vessel Traffic Systems, AIS, LRIT
- Satellite communication, Satellite navigation, satellite based applications (e.g. for container security) incl. design and production of satellites
- Simulation technology (e.g. for ship operating, harbour layout, safety and security, training)
- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UA Vs)
Goals of the Competence Cluster
For the development of the cluster, central topics like safety of ports and of maritime transport as well as environmental security have been defined. The cluster focuses on:
- Developing new and sophisticated cross-industry technologies, products and systems
- Enabling new business concepts
- Building demonstrators of complex systems
- Further strengthening the regional competencies and promoting Bremen as regional and international competence centre for maritime security
